October at a glance
October 17th, 2016
Learning Goals for this month:
Reading:
-extend understanding of texts by connecting the ideas in them to their own knowledge and experience, to other familiar texts, and to the world around them -
text to text (“That reminds me of another book because…”)
text to self (“That reminds me of when I …”)
text to world (“That reminds me of something I saw on the news…”)
-predict the meaning of and solve unfamiliar words using different types of cues.
Eagle Eye (Look at the picture for clues to figure out the word)
Lips the Fish (Get your mouth ready for the first sounds)
Writing:
-begin to establish a personal voice in their writing by using pictures and words that convey their attitude or feeling towards the subject or audience (what is your favourite part and why).
This week we would like to highlight some of the questions you may to wish to ask before reading a book.
What do you see on the cover?
What do you think this story will be about?
Can you find the author’s name?
Can you find the illustrator’s name? What does the illustrator do?
Can you find the title? Do you see any words you know in the title? Read the title for me
Do you think this story will be fiction or non-fiction? How can you tell?
Children are also encouraged to take a “picture walk” through the story. As your child looks at the pictures, he/she is encouraged to discuss what is happening in the pictures.
Here are some questions you may wish to ask:
Do you know what this is called (builds vocabulary that may be needed for the story)
What does it look like this character is doing?
Can you tell where this story is taking place?
The purpose is to:
Math
Number Sense and Numeration:
Science
The study of Earth and Space Systems in Grade 1 focuses on daily and seasonal changes. Students will observe changes that occur in cycles, including day and night and the four seasons. As well they will learn how these cycles affect different living things in our environment. In all their investigations, students will continually refine their ability to observe, using all five senses, and will attempt to describe their observations as accurately as possible. They will also investigate and compare the basic needs of humans and other living things, including the need for air, water, food, warmth, and space using a variety of methods and resources.

It is hard to believe that we are well into the month of October and the cooler weather is now upon us. Since the Fall weather is often changeable, please ensure you send a jacket and/or sweater to school with your child each day.
Last week we started going to the Learning Commons. Our class library time is every week on Wednesday morning. Please have your child bring their library book in so they can exchange for a new one.
This week we are preparing for Thanksgiving.
On Thursday morning we will have the Thanksgiving mass at 9:30.
Thursday is a Spirit Day and the children will be participating in special outdoor activities with their Spirit Team.
A reminder that Friday is a PD day for the children and Monday is Thanksgiving.
