It's been an exciting week for our community: Carp Fair. All week the students were talking about it and what fun activities they wanted to do. I hope that everyone enjoyed it.
This week’s dates to remember:
Tuesday Sept. 27 - Picture Day
Thursday Sept.29 - First Pizza day
New sight words for this week:
little, because, come, here, said
When we practice our sight words we look for the patterns:
Is, it, in, if
He, she, be, we, me, see
On, of, off, or
We continue to review last year's sight words too:
Like, the, to, my, a, are, and, you, can
In writing, your child is working on writing simple complete sentences. The criteria is: start your sentence with a capital, use spaces between words and end your sentence with a period. Learning correct spelling is a process where children are asked to write phonetically by recording the sounds of the letters they hear for unknown words. For example: I like apls. We are also reviewing the correct spelling of kindergarten high-frequency words. The goal is for students to write sentences independently using words they know and phonetic spelling for unknown words. You can encourage their development by being very positive and supportive in this process when they write for a meaningful purpose. For example, a note to the tooth fairy, a letter to a family member. Students have been introduced to new high frequency grade one words.
*Please remember to watch your child’s letter formation and pencil grip when they are writing at home. Always remember to form letters by starting at the top of the letter. Look for a page showing proper letter formation for all letters of the alphabet, going home in your child's mailbag soon.
How can you help at home? Try a few of these activities:
Make a pattern. Have your child describe the pattern and tell what comes next.
Sort laundry or grocery items into groups with your child (all socks, all shirts). Talk about how the items in each group are the same.
Ask your child to sort cutlery when you set the table. Ask what is the same and what is different about the items (forks have tines, all pieces have same handles).
Collect various shoes at home and put them into a pile. Ask your child to sort them (summer/winter; laces/Velcro; adult/child). Ask: “How did you decide what to put in each pile?”
Go on a pattern hunt at home with your child. See how many things you can find that have patterns (sweaters, socks, rugs, dishes). Ask your child to describe the patterns.
Learning Goals For September

We had an exciting week in the grade one class. The children are settling into the routine. They have met their grade 6 buddies and did a fun activity on Friday. We went outside to find pattern outside the school in our beautiful playground.
Thank you for the supplies that are coming in, it is greatly appreciated.
This year we are using an app called Seesaw to share with you what they have been working on in class. The children will be taking pictures of their work and putting an explanation of the task completed. Some of the children will do videos explaining their thinking as well. When you sign up you may only see your child's work, you will be able to "like" and" comment on the work". I am hoping that this will help keep you informed about what is going on in the classroom. All the items that are on the app have been approved by me before they are posted. A letter will be sent home this week with the information on how to join our class.

The first week of school went super fast. The students are starting to adjust to a new routine. On Friday we met our Grade 6 Buddies who will work with us for a year. This week we will be starting the reading program called Snuggle Up and Read. The duo tang will be sent home with your child soon. Check your child's mailbag for the information regarding Seesaw. Seesaw is an app we're using to share what your children are learning at school.
Have a peek of what was happening in our room last week.

Welcome to Grade One at St.Michael, Corkery Catholic School! We are so excited to be starting a new school year together. Grade One is a busy developmental year both socially and academically for your child. Since children learn best by doing, the Grade One year will involve a balance of hands-on exploration, learning in context through play, and teacher initiated experiences. I look forward to getting to know the strengths within each of my students and providing challenging and engaging learning experiences for them.
Please take a few minutes each week to read the class website. It will be filled with important information and learning expectations that will be addressed each month.
The following links are the curriculum documents for you to have a look at if you wish to know more about the grade one program.

School Hours: 9:15 - 3:45
Attendance
If your child is absent or is going to be picked up during the day at school we ask you to send a note in the Agenda or call the school. Students who are absent without a note or phone call will be contacted by the office. If you need to pick your child up early please be aware you need to sign out your child in the office. If you know ahead of time that you will need to pick your child up early instead of bus transportation, please send me a note. Unless I have a note or a call, your child will be placed on the bus as usual.
Running Shoes:
All students must have an extra pair of running shoes to be left at school and worn in the classroom.
Lunch and Snacks:
Please consider sending drinks and snacks in reusable containers. Please send 2 snacks and the morning snack should be a healthy snack such as fruit, yogurt, cheese etc. This is to help promote healthy eating which is part of our curriculum. As we have life threatening allergies in our school we ask that no hummus, shellfish, nuts or nut products are brought to school.
Agendas:
This year the grade one students will receive agendas. The agendas will be kept in a mail bag. Please read and initial the agenda daily and I will do the same. It is a great place to send notes for communication. Please take a few minutes to read the first few pages of the agenda with your child. It contains important and very useful information about the practices at our school. You and your child please sign the proper page that you have read and understand the important information.
Scholastic Book Orders:
Book orders will be sent home approximately once a month. If you wish to participate in this program please write a cheque payable to Scholastic Canada Inc. or you may pay by credit card ( following the instructions on the order form, it worked well last year) They have an excellent choice of beginning reading books, a wonderful way to add to your home library. If at any time you would like the books to be kept as a surprise for your child, just write a note that on the book order and I will call you when the books come in.
Library Day
Our class goes to the school library once per week. Each book is signed out for one week. Take the time to look at the book with your child. Be sure to return your book the following week so your child can borrow another book.
School supplies
Here is list of suggested supplies for this year:
Box of Kleenex
Gluesticks
Crayons: twistables or pencil crayons or markers
Dry erase markers
Ziplocks
Headphones with your child’s name
Scissors
Extra Clothing:
It might be helpful if you could send in an extra pair of clothing for your child. Kindly remember to replenish when wet/soiled clothing are sent home. Please label and put them in a ziplock bag.
Phone Calls:
I like to keep in touch with parents several times a year by phone just to check in and see how things are going and to give updates from school. This year my planning time will be from 1:00 -2:15. I can call before school or after school. Please jot a note if you have a preference and what phone I should be calling. If you need to call me please call the school at 613-256-3672 and leave a message.
Parent Volunteers:
Parent volunteers are most welcome and a great asset to the program. If you can help out for a half day or even a quarter it would be most appreciated. Over the next few weeks schedules will be confirmed and I can send a schedule. The students have French from 1:00 - 2:15.
I am really looking forward to a wonderful year with your children. Please feel free to drop me a note in the agenda or call the school if you have any questions and or concerns. I believe it is very important to keep open communication between home and school no matter how small the problem.
